OK – I saw this on the news last night and did a little homework…
Sure enough, check out this article by the Associated Press –HERE
I found it hard to believe that there was a pumpkin shortage as I had just seen a HUGE display of canned pumpkins at Cub Foods last week!
It is the simple fact that all this press is causing a shortage NOW.
You see, they pumpkins that they are not harvesting NOW would be the canned pumpkins on the shelves for NEXT fall. Sadly, it’s become the supply and demand game…people are panicking and clearing the shelves AND that is driving the prices up to keep up frugalistas from getting any great deals this fall. It’s even hard to find it in stock on Amazon.
My tip for you?
Watch for the deals on the premade frozen pumpkin pies or make it a fun family thing to get a pumpkin in a local pumpkin patch (we Wisconsinites didn’t have that little problem with Hurricane Irene) and make it the old fashioned way — roasting it in an oven and pureeing it. This is, if you don’t mind paying $3 a can when you can get the entire pie for approx $2, with a coupon.
