Whether you have just your single phone or a family with phones, these ways to save on cellular phone service are sure to keep you and you family budget lower. Communication with cell phones is the standard these days. Gone are the days of the home phone being your main line to talk to everyone. With text messaging, social media and even video chats all being done from your phone you need a good plan without all of the added costs.
Ask for a better plan. It never hurts to ask your carrier what new or special plans they have to offer. If you’ve been a reliable customer for several years, you may have to opt in for a couple more years of contract, but it is likely you can get the latest hot plan available. Depending on your needs, you may be able to limit talk minutes, increase text and leave data at moderate for a lower fee than an overall unlimited plan may be. Call and ask what is offered, then check other carriers to see who has the best rates. Asking will often work much better than expected.
Shop Around. If you aren’t getting any where with your current carrier, see if the grass really is greener on the other side! Call their competitors and see what they could do for you if you switch.
Limit data and use wi-fi. If you have a great Internet plan at home, restrict data use on your phones and opt to use the wi-fi at home instead. You can also set up blocks on most phones so they won’t connect unless you are connected via wi-fi just in case. This can be a huge savings on many cellular phone plans.
Switch to a pre-paid plan. Every carrier out there offers a prepaid option. For a flat rate each month, you can have minutes, texts and data. Some of these have limitations on 4G data, so you’ll want to read the fine print in advance. Others have truly unlimited. The best part of these plans is you have no surprise fees. It will simply be the flat fee each month. These are perfect for kids and teens to learn how to budget for their phone appropriately.
Avoid “roaming”. Most companies are pretty well woven through the United States and you can avoid the extra charges, depending on your plan. If you travel abroad, see what programs they have and use them! I know Verizon has Travel Pass which lets you use your phone as normal in most countries for just $10 a day.
See if work will cover part of the costs. Many jobs that require you to be on call, or to take calls throughout the day will cove part of your personal cell phone costs. If you are self employed, you can also deduct part of the costs of your cellular plan from your taxes each year if it is used for work purposes. Many businesses allow you a significant stipend to cover phone costs for on the job use.
Do you run a home based business? Deduct your phone if you use it! Make sure you save your detailed billing so you can verify your deduction in the event of any audit.
No matter who your carrier is or how many phone lines you have, these are great ways to save on cellular phone service. A cell phone is nearly impossible to live without these days. You don’t have to worry anymore about being able to afford that monthly bill when you check out these tips to help you save money.

I like your advice on considering other plans. I think too many people feel like they are stuck in their plan, or they think it is too much work to switch. It can be worth it to switch and save significant money.
In my opinion one of the best ways to save money on cell phone bills, is buying a pre-paid plan. Reason being is that it combines a lesser bill, since it’s pre-paid, and it really limits your internet data usage. Two birds with one stone.
Great tips, thanks for sharing!
