but it can be a quick rush to the Doctor/Hospital to make sure everything is all back to normal.
Face swelling, a rash or hives appearing, your child talking funny… all of those little things starting to add up.
We went through this with Miss Sarah.
She has never liked potatoes so she never had french fries. One night, at dinner, she tried our fried fish. Shortly after that first few bites her face was breaking out, her ears and throat were getting “itchy” and her lips were puffing up.
The first thing that came to mind was Shellfish Allergy as we are familiar with it in a few of our friends and shrimp is often cooked in the same fryers as fish. A quick call confirmed that they DID cook shrimp in with fish and a quick call to the clinic meant treatment for a food allergy…
We got epi pens that day and an appointment with an Allergist.
It was a pretty simple experience – an interview and then the “poke” test. They watch the “pokes” to see what reacts and then wipe it off with something that also stops any itch…you can see her back in the picture.
We were wrong.
It wasn’t the fish she ate that night, it was the apple she ate with it.
Miss Sarah has Oral Allergy Syndrome– a huge reaction to tree pollens that manifests in fresh produce and nuts. Yup. Our child is allergic to fresh fruits and veggies.
She may have any of a number of allergic reactions that usually occur very rapidly, within minutes of eating a trigger food. The most common reaction is an itching or burning sensation in the lips, mouth, ears and/or throat. Sometimes other reactions can be triggered in the eyes, nose, and skin. Swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat can happen too. Rarely it can cause anaphylaxis.
It can hit her on the back end of things too — with flu like symptoms as her body tries to get it out of her.
Here is a list of things that can hurt her:
Almonds, apples, apricots, avocados, bananas, berries (Strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, etc), carrots, celery, cherries, chicory, citrus (oranges, lemons, etc), coriander, fennel, fig, grapes, hazel nuts, kiwi, mango, nectarines, parsley, parsnips, peaches, peanut, pears, peppers, pineapple, plums, pomegranates, potatoes, prunes, soy, watermelon, wheat, walnuts — possible rhubarb and celery too!
Crazy, isn’t it?
Not that all of those things would be eaten raw normally but it has been a little challenge to still teach a kid to “eat the rainbow”.
It takes a lot of preparation on my end.
Heat/cooking kills the pollen allergen in the food so I make a lot of fruit preserves. Peach, pear, plum, pineapple, berries, rhubarb, cherry, pomegranate and grape. All are wonderful with peanut butter and enter the sandwich realm. I make home made apple sauce and canned apple slices. I bake fruit into things like muffins/scones/pancakes/cookies. I lightly steam fruit and then freeze it. That goes into things like smoothies. We hunt for things NOT on the list and “try” them…. like clementines have never caused a reaction. All veggies have to be steamed or I get frozen ones.
So — that may help answer the question on how I can plan to get through a whole month with only $25 to shop with. Fresh produce isn’t really in our world until I pre-treat it and we are packed right now with home canned goodness, dehydrated items and frozen treats.
