Don’t be deceived by the small size of the chromecast by Google audio system as it is designed to stream WiFi over your audio speakers from your device like a phone, tablet or computer.
It comes with a 3.5 mm cord to plug into your speakers and it also comes with a plug in power supply.
It has a host of features enabling you to play most content from your devices powered speakers, or your old school stereo. We found that the sound was above our expectations for a simple device, however you need to download the Google Home app for your phone or tablet to operate the chromecast. It is hooked up to our old style stereo and I can now play vintage classics for my Father-in-law loud enough for him to hear. That alone was a golden endorsement for this item.
The one thing we would change, despite all of it’s advantages, we found it disturbing as it seems to want excessive personal information from your Google accounts. While most people would probably be fine installing it, this was just something I wanted to mention if you are private with your date, like we are. There may be permissions in there that you can find or turn off, but we couldn’t find them.
We understand that smart tech is the wave of the future, but we are a Gen-Xer and Baby Boomer in this house. The Millenials would be all over this and love it.
We were surprised to learn that it works with Apple devices as the Android world is the Google platform. The chromecast works with streaming sites that are Google friendly like Spotify, Google Play, Slacker Radio, Pandora, etc — as far as I can tell, it doesn’t work with YouTube unless you get the free YouTube Music app.
It is small — so it doesn’t stand out obnoxiously. If you add one of these little gems to each speaker, in a different room, you can create a wireless sound system in your hoe that is controlled by your wireless device. That. Blows. My. Mind.
Overall, we feel that this little guy packs a great bang for the buck and will come in beautifully for traveling. You can stream your favorites at the hotel instead of hunting down a local radio station that matches your preferences.
