With 175 years experience in toys and education, Galt knows a thing or two about designing toys to encourage children to learn through play, and also have fun! We were sent some fun items from the GALT company to try out for our “beat the summer boredom” article and we got to play with them!
Travel Activity Books-
Long drives can be tough on kids. As parents I think we have all been guilty once or twice of giving our kids whatever they want just so that we can have some quiet in coming from the backseat. Galt’s Travel Activity books offer a very good alternative to electronic devices. My 5 ½ year old was thrilled to dive into them. The water coloring tablets are perfect for the car. There is no mess whatsoever and the pages are rigid enough that your child will not need any sort of surface to rest the book. The pen is filled with water that reveals a picture when your child draws on the tablet. When it dries, the picture fades so your child can play with it over and over again. Even my two year old was enjoying using these books and for her I think this will be a great tool to help develop eye-hand coordination.
The Foil Picture and Mosaic Picture booklets got us mixed results…
The foil book has pictures with cutout sections that are peeled away to reveal an adhesive surface. Foil is rubbed over these area and you create a shimmering foil picture. My older daughter has a love of anything that sparkles and really got into doing this. The Foil Picture book is probably not as great for the car. Unless you have an incredibly responsible 5 year old, you will wind up with little pieces of paper all over the floor of your mini van as she peels of sections of the picture and discards them – just sayin. This book would be a great “rainy day” activity on vacation. My daughter was occupied with this quiet activity for quite a long time and was delighted with the pictures she created.
We had less success with the Mosaic Picture book. I think that my daughter might be a bit on the young side for this one. She had trouble removing the little stickers from their sheets and also just got bored with the activity and abandoned it after a short amount of time. My daughter is 5 now and I think that I child a year or two older would really get into this. The pictures are pretty cute!
Now, for the Fishing Boat and Duck Family –
Quite simply, these toys are terrific! There is nothing about them that I do not like. They are simple, colorful and well thought out. The duck family includes a parent duck and three ducklings. The ducklings all fit into a compartment in the parent duck for easy storage.
The fishing boat toy is equally great. Once again all of the pieces fit inside the boat for easy storage. My 5 year old was jumping up and down begging for a bath when these toys came to our house. I put both kiddos in there and let them have at it. The simplicity of these toys allowed my 5 year old a blank slate for imaginative play. My 2 year old loved holding as many ducks and little fish as she could at one time while saying (ok, yelling) “Duck! Fish! Boat! Guy!” repeatedly. I think I could have left them in the water all evening and they would have been completely content with these toys.
In addition to being easy to store, these toys also drain well so you won’t have old bath water hanging out inside them between uses. In a world where so many toys so a lot of the playing for you, it is extremely welcome to see well crafted, simple toys that allow your child to do the work of childhood: imagine and play!
I was very impressed with all the products that my family tried from the Galt Company. I will definitely be seeking out more of their products in the future!
