Miss Sarah has a goofy food allergy: she can’t eat raw fruits or vegetables without a reaction. It is all related to an off the chart tree pollen allergy that confuses her body with the plant proteins in the produce. They mimic the proteins in the pollen and her body can’t tell the difference.
Eat an apple, use an Epi pen.
Needless to say, we have always kept our eyes open for alternatives that let her enjoy the nutrition without the undesired effects. Simply cooking or processing the produce fixes the issue for her and she can enjoy the host of flavors and nutrients that nature gifts us.
Crispy Fruit is our new found friend. By freeze drying the different fruits, they are safe for Miss Sarah to enjoy. Their seven flavors are in easy to pack little pouches that guard their flavors and crispiness. With fruit like apple, pineapple, banana, Asian pear, mango, tangerine and even cantaloupe there is a delightful flavor experience for any discriminating taste. Miss Sarah loves apple and I’m partial to the pineapple.
Besides eating them just out of bag, we have broken them down into smaller pieces and popped into muffin batter. They did “plump” a bit and add texture besides nutrition to the baked treats.
