We have all been there. You found the perfect home or apartment for your family and have moved in to only realize the neighbors are your worst nightmares. While there are situations that are unavoidable, and occasions when you just have to accept you aren’t going to get along – many issues can be resolved. If you’ve ever been faced with the dread of living next door to someone who is unsavory or annoying, then these tips are sure to help.
HOW TO DEAL WITH BAD NEIGHBORS
REACH OUT FOR FRIENDSHIP: Sometimes that neighbor who continually blares music late at night, leaves garbage on the curb or doesn’t control their unruly pet just needs a good friend. Perhaps they are depressed from a job loss. Maybe their spouse has passed away or left them. It could even be that they were never taught the fundamentals of respecting the people around you. Making that first step forward to introduce yourself and open a line of communication and friendship may be just what they need. Once a friendly encounter has been established, you can gently encourage or make suggestions to help them out. Just be aware of their state of mind and always be willing to pitch in to help when necessary.
CONTACT THE HOA/POA: Some neighborhoods and subdivisions have property owners associations that help handle difficult issues amongst their residents. If your neighbor is stepping over their boundaries or causing your family difficulty, it may be time to check with the local authorities. If the offense is criminal certainly step up to the local police department, but if it is a matter of annoyance or not following local property owners guidelines then your local HOA or POA is the way to go.
PUT UP A FENCE: If your neighbors yard is an eyesore or their behavior is inappropriate for your family to view, consider putting up a fence between properties to eliminate the views. While this is a cost, if you are planning to remain in your home for a length of time it can be a good investment and potentially raise your property value as well.
TAKE LEGAL ACTIONS: Some issues amongst neighbors are more than a simple annoyance that can be handled by a friendly face or HOA request. There are occasions where illegal activity is happening or harassment is taking place. If you have been threatened with physical harm, your children are being bullied or you see things happening you know are illegal, don’t hesitate to involve the police.
MAKE A MOVE: As a last resort moving to a new home or apartment is the way to go. This can be financially difficult for some, or emotionally frustrating for others but the overall health and happiness of your family is what is important. Begin saving money to facilitate a move, and look at your options for listing your home. While leaving an area you love may be difficult, sometimes those tough moves are the best for everyone involved.
Living next door to people who make you uncomfortable or who pose a threat to your family can cause issues not only in your home life, but at work and within your relationships. Taking control of the situation by reaching out, involving authorities or as a last resort planning a move can not only save your day to day frustrations, but ultimately save a marriage and protect your children.
