How to Make Pear Honey

I have wonderful memories of visiting my mom’s aunts in Southern Illinois over the summers. Aunt Florence and Aunt Fern reminded her of her mother, who she lost to cancer when she was only four. These two women were different but had the largest hearts I ever knew. Aunt Fern had a chicken farm and did a lot of canning. She was a woman after my own heart and taught me how to make Pear Butter, or as our family called it: pear honey.
This exact recipe she shared with me is the reason I wanted to plant a dwarf pear tree in the backyard of our new house Trust me, once you taste it for yourself? You will understand why.
This yummy sweet treat is perfect on those cold winter mornings when it fills the nooks and crannies on that toasted English Muffin or on your fresh waffle! It’s great on pound cake as a quick dessert, or even in a PBJ!
What is the best kind of pear for pear honey?
As I have said, Pear Honey is an old recipe that’s been passed down through families. We especially like it with hot biscuits and butter in our house. It’s also good on pound cake or even ice cream – you will find tons of ways to enjoy it – it really is that great.
As for the pears, the actual kind doesn’t seem to really make a difference in the recipe. Just make sure the pears you use are very firm. If they are mushy, it can alter the taste and how long it actually lasts.
The secret to pear honey…
The recipe is simple. It’s easy. Your crockpot does most of the work. (Yippee!) You could do it over the stove, if you wish, it just takes longer. Personally? I love things that work for me while I sleep – so slow cooker it is!
Our Pear Honey Recipe
As I said, this has been in our family for a while – I hope you like it as much as we do!
You will need:
4 pounds of pears. My favorite kind?
Sale.
Bosc, Anjou, T. As long as it is on sale, but free is even better! That is why I now have my own tree.
Why 4 pounds? Because you will need 8 cups of ground pears to make this and 1 pound of pears (4 medium) = 2 cups sliced/ground.
You also want your pears to be SOFT. Not moldy, but a few sweet spots (brown) are OK. **Keep in mind that pears are on the dirty dozen list so, unless you know they are organic, you want to peel them.
I will admit, instead of grinding or chopping them? I pop them in my blender and do a quick and rough puree.
You will also need 8 cups of sugar, and 1 large can of crushed pineapple.
Stove Top Pear Honey Method:
Cook the pears and sugar together until rather thick and clear. Add pineapple, and cook 10 to 15 minutes more. Remove from stove and place into freezer containers. Keep it in the freezer, thawing each container as you needed it.
Slow Cooker Pear Honey Method:
Put the pears and sugar together, and cook on low for 6 – 8 hours. They will darken slightly as they cook when compared to the stovetop method. Add the pineapple and cook for 30 – 60 minutes more on low. Place into freezer containers and freeze when cool.
