It’s the beginning of a new year as far as the fashion world is concerned, and a new year means new trends! You should be happy to see that headbands have continued to remain popular thanks to their functionality and ability to instantly update an outfit and enhance your hair extensionsas well. For fall, designers have offered us an interesting array of hair accessory styles that seemed to hug each end of the fashion spectrum but provided no middle ground. Styles varied completely and were seen as: soft and feminine, hard metal and grungy, simple and functional, flamboyant and ostentatious, wearable by anyone, or just interesting to look at. Which of the following styles would you actually wear?
Headbands on the runways of designers like Dolce & Gabbana, were ornate and over-the-top opulent. Embellishments and ornaments like pearls, crystals, and gold beads were sewn wide pieces of black fabric, wrapped around the head, and fastened with gold barrettes underneath bobs. These headbands complement many fall trends including baroque-inspired, Victorian, the “golden” age, and heavy metal. These headbands may appear relatively simple, but designs became increasingly more embellished as the Dolce & Gabbana show progressed- often stealing the spotlight from the clothes themselves. During the show you also viewed models wearing two headbands at the same time- one more embellished than the next.
Shiny ribbons of silk and satin were framed with wide crystal brooches at Oscar de la Renta. The soft sheen of the ribbon and sparkle of the crystal- even though it’s large- make this headband a wonderful option for a holiday party. This sort of headband would add glamour and sophistication to any solid-color dress and look beautiful with an updo like this bouffant. The ribbon frames your face, making it the perfect canvas for icy, light pink and neutral makeup and rosy cheeks. This headband also creates a look that’s so upscale it almost looks like the outfit should be completed with silk elbow-length gloves and several sparkly cocktail rings. Complement fall’s ‘heirloom jewels’ trend perfectly!
Now all that you need to do is head to your nearest craft store and stock up on brooches, crystals, ribbon, and other embellishments such as pearls. Study the beautiful fall headbands that you saw on the runway and create your own fall headbands, on a budget! With a little bit of creativity and determination, your headbands will definitely look just as great as the headbands seen on the runway, or even better!
