Waste not, want not is a common phrase we all grew up hearing and trying to live by. It is definitely possible to get the most out of your groceries when you follow some simple tips. Here are just a few of the many ways to get more bang for your buck.
Be prepared. It’s super important to have a supply of freezer bags, plastic containers, and ample space in your freezer. It takes no time at all to get those leftovers and extra meals ready to go for another time.
Freeze leftovers. Now that you are stocked up on supplies, prep the leftovers into individual servings for next day or next week’s lunches.
But local and fresh. Whenever possible, buy your produce locally at the supermarket or a farmer’s market only one to three days before using. They are fresher, last longer, and taste better.
Buy in bulk. When your favorite pantry items go on sale stock up and save. If you have the room, double up and go back for that extra savings. Careful with dairy and deli items since they won’t last as long as canned and boxed goods.
Stay organized. Speaking of your fridge and pantry, keep it organized so you always have a good idea of what you have on hand. This makes your shopping list easier to make and to stick to.
Don’t overbuy. Whatever you do, don’t go shopping on an empty stomach. Make that list, get coupons ready, and stick to it as best as you can. Try to stay away from the end aisles of the store too. They are packed with promotions that usually aren’t needed.
Save it. When making homemade soups and stews, make sure you are saving and freezing any leftover stock. Using ice cube trays is a great and easy way to freeze it and have available for future recipes. This is especially helpful when boiling chicken or beef. Save that wonderful stock.
Share. If you are making a big Sunday dinner and have too many leftovers, share with friends and neighbors because you never know when the doorbell will ring with dinner for you.
