I couldn’t really complain as it had lasted just a few days short of 20 years. Yes, we really got our money out of it….
Here I was, starting online research to figure out what to replace it with and the hubster did it for FREE.
Before I get started, keep in mind that my husband is a professional. He is a Broadcast Engineer – who specializes with all the technical computer crap from Satellite trucks to glorified VCRs. He is used to working with electronic components, reading schematics and more. He can tell if something is safe to repair or not but looking at it.
I was right, it was the magnetron. The part alone would have cost more than a new microwave, unless we got it for free.
There is a microwave graveyard at his work — and get got clearance to scavenge parts, if he could find some that work. (He got permission first). They had one, only a few years old, that had a broken latch. It was the same manufacturer as our oven!
was a plastic piece, instead of the kind they used before (which my husband told me about but I can’t remember what kind of material he said, LOL)
First, he thought he could pull the magnetron from the newer one and pop it into our older one.
No go, they were different.
He COULD put the latch from our older one into the newer one! He removed the broken plastic one and switched them out.
