There has been a steady trend through the media about “going back to the basics” in home food preparation – even Good Morning America had a feature on grinding your own grains for baking. It’s the newest trend: literally doing it yourself. We used to joke in my family about the “Martha Stewart” way of making something like a loaf of bread:
- grow the grain
- dry the grain
- grind it
- make the dough
- bake it into bread
Of course, it was served with homemade butter: from the cow you raised, milked, etc. We used to laugh so hard about it!

By purchasing organic grains, I can make fresh flour as I need it; just in time for baking. I no longer have to rely on the over bleached and then re-fortified flour on the mass market, worry about the carcinogens that come from the bromide process, or having too much “white” food. My family is getting used to the rich, nutty flavors of brown breads and I am having fun making things like fresh pasta or pizza dough with miss Sarah. She recently learned how to hand-pop dough into rolls.
It’s incredible and I’m addicted.
