If you know me, you know that I am a big believer in bringing kids into the kitchen. Cooking is the perfect STEAM learning activity and in this busy world, it is a great way to spend some quality time with your children. To that end, I have tried lots of kitchen implements and knives geared towards kids and I am here to tell you that the Opinel Le Petit Chef Knife blows them all out of the water.
Founded in 1890 in the Savoie region of France by Joseph Opinel, this company has been making beautiful pocket knives for a long time. 127 years later this still family owned company has expanded to include full lines of kitchen knives and accessories like this beautiful wine opener/cheese knife.
The Le Petit Chef Knife set includes a child sized chef knife and a finger guard. Like all Opinel knives, this lovely little knife is made with high quality materials. Opinel knives feature a beautiful beech wood handle. Beech wood is hard and durable making the handle functional while showing off the beauty of the wood. The 4” blade is made of stainless steel to make usage and maintenance easy.
My favorite feature of the Le Petit Chef Knife is the finger hole where the blade meets the handle. This encourages children to learn the correct hand position for using a knife and give them control over the 4” blade to feel confident.
The very best thing about this knife is that it actually is knife. Unlike every other children’s knife I have come across this knife is sharp. Most knives made for children are fairly dull, and in my opinion, more dangerous. I have watched my daughter sawing away at a veggie with other brands and been terrified that the dull edge would slip and she would cut herself. The Opinel Le Petit Chef knife is sharp enough to make nice clean slices. The finger guard that is included not only protects little fingers as they learn knife skills, but also teaches the proper position for holding food as you cut it.
I truly cannot say enough good things about the Opinel Le Petit Chef Set. If you have a child who enjoys spending time with you in the kitchen, this is the knife you want to get. It is small enough to be easy for a child to use but effective enough that it can be used for years.
