I know it’s getting close to Valentine’s Day, but everywhere you look right now are Red Velvet Cake recipes, Red Velvet Cheesecake, Red Velvet Brownies, etc. I just saw an ad for Duncan Hines Red Velvet Cake Mix!
It is basically the SAME recipe as “normal” cake/cheesecake/brownies but they use 2 other things: buttermilk and a LOT of red food coloring. I can understand the buttermilk making a slightly richer texture but the food coloring?
We try to avoid a lot of pre-processed foods for one simple reason: the additives. The preservatives, sodium, sugar, food coloring, etc.
First of all, they have linked consuming food coloring to increased hyperactivity, restlessness, and attention problems in some children – particularly those with ADHD. Who needs a 6 year old on “speed”. Then add some more sugar….
The other big thing is eating something that you can’t pronounce…. but that is something to discuss for a different day.
Now,before you tell me “everything in moderation”, etc — we DO eat sweets here. I make cookies, cakes, brownies, muffins, etc — usually from scratch. I simply don’t get adding a lot of food coloring to them.
Am I missing something?
