One o the hardest things you can see in your life is the slow deterioration of your parent. In March of 2020, my Momma was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. We weren’t really surprised as the signs were pretty obvious over the previous few months: she lost track of her thoughts in the middle of sentences, she would open doors to closets looking at trying to get out of the room, and she had a difficult time with certain words. While you are at stage three when you are diagnosed, and it usually takes 8 – 10 years to work through to stage seven, my Momma didn’t even make it a year. The last few months of her life? She would eat nothing but pie. She took an almost childlike delight in every bite – it didn’t matter what kind of pie. Fruit filled, creamy, savory, it was all an option if there was a piecrust involved…that is why I connected with a few of my fellow bloggers – to come up with a list of 75 Amazing Pies My Momma Would Love To Eat if she were still here today.
I’m pretty sure my Momma’s love of pies went back to her early childhood. She was only four when her mother died of Breast Cancer, but her Momma (my grandma) was a thrifty and resourceful woman as it was just after WWII. She had a Victory Garden, canned a lot, and often made pies as a way to creatively use any leftovers – be it savory or fruit leftover from canning season. My Momma would talk about her memories of standing on a stool, next to her Momma in the kitchen, making a little pie in a canning jar lid as her Momma made full-sized pies right next to her. Her memory was quite vivid – down to the flour sack towel that was tied around her waist.
I will always carry the memory of my Momma, sitting at her dining room table, thoroughly enjoying a mixed berry two-crust pie. She started from the center and ate her way towards the edges. If you could have only seen the look of glee on her face as she savored each and every bite.
You can learn a little more about my Momma here — it’s her online Obituary. With all the joys that COVID-19 has brought us, we have to wait to have her life celebration. Just her brothers and sisters alone are over the Wisconsin limit of 10 people for a gathering.
