Where did Buffalo chicken come from?

The Buffalo chicken concept comes from the alleged origins of Buffalo Chicken Wings. It is said that they came from a restaurant in Buffalo, NY, in the early 1960s, which is what gives them the name.

Another version says the spicey chicken wings come from the windy city. It was a huge center of meatpacking plants which would lead to a surplus of chicken wings. Someone would want to create a use for them and build a market. After all, necessity is the mother of invention, LOL.

What kind of cheese is in Buffalo Chicken ring?

For my purposes, I use cream cheese for the texture and also cheddar cheese for the little zippy tang that balances the hot sauce nicely.

This one is easy to switch up for different crescent ring recipes

You can take the basic idea of the ring and use any other kind of filling that you want — like creamy chicken broccoli, pizza-type toppings, turn it into a cheeseburger ring, etc.

This particular one is a pretty basic version so Miss Sarah will eat it…normally I add diced celery and onions to it before adding the cheddar cheese and folding it all up. It seems like a natural fit to me as Buffalo wings are always served with celery sticks.

Buffalo Chicken Ring with Canned Chicken

Yes, you can use canned chicken and it will save you a bit of time. My tip: make sure you get canned breast (white) meat. From my experience, the mixed or dark meat tends to have a few bits of nasty always mixed into it. It is worth the price to pay a little more for better quality.

I can my own boneless skinless chicken breast, but even shredded rotisserie chicken meat would work for this. I recently saw them for $3.49 on clearance at my local Kroger!

Buffalo Chicken Crescent Ring Recipe

I do want to say that most people add blue cheese crumbles to their Buffalo chicken instead of cheddar – that is a personal choice. Buffalo wings are usually served with blue cheese dressing – so it seems like a natural pairing. I really don’t think the blue cheese crumbles bake well with this. It really is different than making a Buffalo chicken dip recipe.

Buffalo Chicken Ring Ingredients

Buffalo Chicken Ring Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of crescent roll dough
  • 2 cups cooked chicken or shredded chicken
  • 1 cup hot sauce – I like to use Frank’s but any buffalo sauce will do
  • 1 cup cheddar shredded cheese
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature

Separate crescent rolls into rectangles and then lay out the dough as shown on your nonstick baking sheet with the short sides of triangles on the inside to make a plus sign.

Lay another plus sign of crescent toll dough over the first, but with a 45-degree twist to it. You will see the bottoms overlap.

That, my friends, is the classic crescent ring technique.

Bake for 30 minutes in your preheated oven or until your chicken ring is a nice golden brown.

I like to remove the parchment paper with the chicken ring from my prepared baking sheet, setting it onto the counter to help cool a bit. It also keeps the bottom of the ring from crisping up even more while still laying on that hot baking sheet.

Cool slightly, serve with blue cheese dressing, ranch dressing, or, in Miss Sarah’s case, ketchup. I like to use a small glass bowl in the center of the ring, use blue cheese dressing, and had a touch of hot sauce to it – use a toothpick to pull the red out a bit for a fun pattern that helps make the presentation!
